BTAN LLC’s SPRAY TANNING FAQ’s

Will my skin look orange?

No! The advanced technology currently used in sunless tanning solutions is designed to ensure a natural, bronze glow. The BTAN LLC professional can help you select the proper level of tanning solution to best match your skin tone.

Does spray tanning solution have an odor after contact with my skin?

Norvell spray tanning solutions use breakthrough odor control technology designed to virtually eliminate the odor that may be present when the solution interacts with the skin.

Will the cosmetic bronzer stain clothing?

No, the spray tanning solution which includes a cosmetic bronzer is water soluble and will be removed after the next wash in cold water. However, in some instances, the DHA in the tanning solution may permanently stain undergarments worn during the spray session.

How long does a spray tan last?

A spray tan can last up to 5–7 days depending on the solution you select and the condition of your skin.

Are there ways to enhance the spray tanning results?

Yes, take-home products from Norvell sold by BTAN LLC will enhance and extend your spray tanning results. Ask your BTAN LLC Professional to explain and recommend the right product for your skin type and desired results.

What is DHA (dihydroxyacetone)?

The active ingredient most often used in all sunless tanners including tinted moisturizers, self‑tanners, and spray tan solution is called Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. DHA is a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. DHA is often derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane. The FDA added DHA to the list of approved colors for cosmetic products in the 1970s.

Is the DHA in spray tanning solution safe?

The FDA has approved DHA for external application to the skin. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation, or ingestion. To ensure complete protection, the FDA suggests wearing protective eyewear, nose filters, lip balm, and undergarments.

At BTAN LLC, we recognize that every client has their own comfort level. You may choose how you prefer to spray tan and which protective items you wish to use. Some clients tan nude, while others prefer undergarments. Some choose protective items, and others do not. All options are available to support your comfort throughout the session.

What happens if the spray tanning solution gets in the eyes?

The FDA recommends that DHA not be used in the eyes or surrounding areas. Protective eyewear is recommended and can be supplied by BTAN LLC. If your eyes feel irritated, gently rinse with water. For additional questions or if irritation persists, consult a health care professional.

What happens if a spray tanning solution is inhaled?

The FDA recommends that DHA not be inhaled. Nose filters are recommended, which can be supplied by BTAN LLC. For additional questions or if irritation persists, consult a health care professional.

What is the spray tan (DHA) advisory?

The FDA advises that users avoid inhaling or ingesting DHA or letting the spray get into the eyes. When using DHA‑containing products as an all‑over spray or mist, it may be difficult to avoid exposure in a manner for which DHA is not approved, including the area of the eyes, lips, or mucous membrane, or internally.

The FDA recommends protective measures to eliminate eye contact, inhalation or ingestion during a spray tan session, such as:

Eye protection

Nose filters

Lip balm

Undergarments

For additional questions or concerns regarding DHA, consult a health care professional or the FDA website.

POST‑SPRAY TAN INSTRUCTIONS

Your Glow Is Developing — Treat It With Care

Your Norvell spray tan is now developing beneath the bronzer, and the next several hours are essential for achieving that smooth, even, long‑lasting BTAN finish. Think of this stage like protecting a luxury garment: gentle, intentional, and absolutely no shortcuts.

Follow these steps to ensure your glow develops beautifully and lasts as long as possible.

1. IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOUR SPRAY TAN

Your skin is still drying and the solution is settling. This stage is delicate — treat your glow with care.

  • Avoid touching your skin

  • Keep arms and legs from rubbing together

  • Do NOT sit directly on leather or car seats

  • If you have leather seats, bring a towel to place underneath you to prevent transfer

  • Wear loose, dark clothing

  • Avoid sweating, heat, humidity, and water exposure

  • Do not wash your hands unless absolutely necessary

Optional Comfort Add‑Ons (Highly Recommended)

To keep you feeling fresh — not sticky — and to protect your tan from transferring onto clothing or car seats, BTAN offers:

  • Norvell Tan‑Lucent Drying Powder A weightless finishing powder that eliminates stickiness and leaves your skin feeling silky, clean, and comfortable.

  • Norvell HydroFirm Setting Spray A hydrating, skin‑tightening finishing mist that locks in your tan, enhances development, and helps prevent transfer.

These can be added to any spray tan for an additional fee.

Unlimited Members:

Your membership already includes both Tan‑Lucent Powder and HydroFirm Setting Spray at every session — no extra charge.

Your tan is delicate right now — treat it like silk.

2. UNTIL YOUR FIRST RINSE

This is the most sensitive phase of development.

  • Stay completely dry

  • Avoid working out, cleaning, cooking over steam, or anything that causes sweat

  • Do not apply lotion, deodorant, perfume, or makeup

  • Avoid pets jumping on you

  • If sleeping in your tan, wear long, loose pajamas and avoid skin‑to‑skin contact

Your bronzer is not your final color — trust the process.

3. YOUR FIRST RINSE (NOT A FULL SHOWER)

Your rinse time depends on the solution used — I will tell you your exact timing at your appointment.

When it’s time:

  • Rinse with lukewarm water only

  • Do NOT use soap

  • Do NOT scrub

  • Let the bronzer wash away naturally

  • Pat dry with a clean towel — never rub

Your color will continue to deepen for the next 12–24 hours.

4. AFTER YOUR FIRST RINSE

Your tan is still developing underneath the skin.

  • Avoid lotions for the first 24 hours unless I instruct otherwise

  • Avoid sweating or getting wet for the remainder of the development window

  • Keep your skin product‑free

  • Wear loose clothing

Your glow is settling — be gentle with it.

5. 24 HOURS AFTER YOUR SPRAY TAN

Your tan is now fully developed and ready to be maintained.

  • Moisturize daily with an oil‑free lotion

  • Use a gentle, sulfate‑free body wash

  • Avoid Dove, Olay, bar soaps, and anything that leaves residue

  • Pat dry after showers

  • Avoid long hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms

  • Shave lightly and only when necessary

  • Use Norvell‑approved tan extenders for maximum longevity

Hydration is the secret to a long‑lasting, even fade.

6. WHAT TO AVOID TO PROTECT YOUR GLOW

These are the biggest tan‑killers:

  • Oils

  • Heavy fragrances

  • Exfoliating gloves or scrubs

  • Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs on the body

  • Chlorine

  • Hot tubs

  • Spray deodorants

  • Tight clothing that rubs (sports bras, leggings, socks)

Your tan is a luxury treatment — protect it like one.

7. EXTEND & ENHANCE YOUR TAN BETWEEN SESSIONS

For the longest‑lasting, most radiant results:

  • Moisturize morning and night

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Use a DHA‑infused tan extender every 2–3 days

  • Keep showers short and warm

  • Pat dry, never rub

  • Maintain your skin barrier with gentle, hydrating products

Recommended Norvell Enhancers:

  • Glow System Shower Cleanser

  • Glow System Body Butter

  • Prolong Tan Extender

  • Post‑Tan Face Lotion

  • Norvell Self‑Tanners for touch‑ups

A well‑cared‑for tan fades like velvet — soft, smooth, and even.

PRE‑SPRAY TAN INSTRUCTIONS

A flawless Norvell spray tan begins long before the solution touches your skin. Proper prep is the difference between a deep, even, long‑lasting glow… and a tan that never reaches its full depth.

1. 24–48 HOURS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Exfoliate Thoroughly (This Is the Most Important Step)

Your skin must be fresh, smooth, and free of buildup for the DHA to absorb evenly.

  • Exfoliate using an oil‑free mitt or scrub

  • Focus on elbows, knees, ankles, heels, underarms, and any dry areas

  • Remove ALL old self‑tan, lotion residue, deodorant buildup, and dead skin

  • Avoid bar soaps, Dove, Olay, or any high‑pH cleansers — they leave a film that blocks color

  • Norvell recommends their Sea Coral Salt Scrub for best results

Your skin should feel clean and polished — never slippery or moisturized.

2. 24 HOURS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Shave or Wax (If Needed)

  • Shave or wax at least 24 hours prior

  • This allows pores to close and prevents “dark dots”

  • Rinse thoroughly to remove shave cream residue

Avoid These for 48 Hours Before Your Tan:

  • Retinoids

  • AHAs/BHAs

  • Scrubs

  • Resurfacing products

  • Heavy oils

These disrupt your skin’s pH and interfere with DHA development.

3. THE DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT

Arrive With Completely Bare Skin

This means no:

  • Lotion

  • Oils

  • Deodorant

  • Perfume

  • Makeup

  • Body spray

  • Serums

  • Sunscreen

Anything on your skin creates a barrier and prevents the solution from absorbing.

Shower Correctly

  • Use a clear, oil‑free body wash only

  • Rinse thoroughly — especially underarms, neck, chest, and behind knees

  • Do NOT use conditioner on your body (it leaves residue)

Your skin should feel clean, dry, and product‑free.

4. WHAT TO BRING & WEAR

  • Loose, dark clothing

  • Slip‑on shoes or sandals

  • Hair tied back (minimal product)

  • Remove jewelry

Tight clothing, bras, socks, leggings, and elastic bands can rub off your fresh tan.

5. WHEN YOU ARRIVE (STUDIO OR MOBILE)

Barrier Cream Application

Once you arrive — or once I arrive to you — YOU will apply barrier cream to protect areas that naturally over‑absorb color:

  • Cuticles

  • Nails

  • Palms

  • Soles of feet

  • Dry patches (if needed)

If you prefer, you may use Sticky Feet instead of cream for the soles.

This step is essential for a clean, professional finish.

6. OPTIONAL (BUT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED): pH BALANCING PREP SPRAY

Norvell XLATAN™ pH Balancing Spray

This professional mist:

  • Balances your skin’s pH

  • Removes invisible residue

  • Ensures deeper, more even color

  • Helps your tan last longer

How You Receive It:

  • Unlimited Monthly Members: This step is included automatically in every session

  • All Other Clients: You may add this upgrade to your spray tan for enhanced results

This is the same step Norvell recommends for all professional sessions — and it makes a noticeable difference.

7. IF YOU WANT THE DARKEST POSSIBLE COLOR

These steps are non‑negotiable:

  • Exfoliate twice in the 48 hours before your appointment

  • Hydrate internally (drink water)

  • Keep your skin completely product‑free the day of your session

  • Avoid sweating or showering before your appointment

  • Follow every instruction exactly

Your skin is the canvas. The prep determines the masterpiece.

8. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE STEPS

If you skip exfoliation, use the wrong products, arrive with lotion or deodorant, or ignore the prep guidelines:

  • Your tan will not reach its full depth

  • It may develop unevenly

  • It may fade faster

  • BTAN, LLC cannot guarantee results

BTAN, LLC delivers luxury‑level results — but only when your skin is prepared correctly. If you skip a step, your tan will tell on you. And yes… I will know.

What Is Spray Tanning?

Spray tanning is the art and science of creating a natural‑looking, sun‑kissed glow without UV exposure. Instead of relying on tanning beds or hours in the sun, a fine mist of professional Norvell sunless solution is applied evenly across the skin using a handheld spray system.

The active ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone), interacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin to create a beautiful, bronzed color. This reaction happens gradually over several hours, deepening into your custom BTAN shade.

Spray tanning is:

  • Safe — no UV rays, no skin damage

  • Customizable — your color is tailored to your skin tone, undertones, and desired depth

  • Fast — the application takes only minutes

  • Flattering — smooths the appearance of skin, evens tone, and enhances definition

  • Long‑lasting — with proper prep and aftercare, your glow lasts 7–10 days

At BTAN, LLC, every tan is applied by hand using premium Norvell solutions, ensuring an even, streak‑free, photo‑ready finish. Whether you want a subtle glow or a deep, rich bronze, your spray tan is fully customized to you — your skin, your goals, your moment.
